Discussions are reportedly taking place to bring new ownership to the Kansas City Royals.

According to The Athletic, Royals owner David Glass, 84, is in talks to sell the team he's owned since 2000. Kansas City native and Cleveland Indians vice-chairman John Sherman is reportedly leading the group to purchase the club.

After the news broke, the Kansas City Royals released a statement saying they "are not in a position to make any comments on the published speculation regarding any potential sale of the ball club."

It added the team will not make any other statements at this time.

The report states it is not known whether the two sides are close to a deal. MLB owners must also approve any acquisition of a team.

Sherman joined the Indians in 2016. He is known for building up Kansas City-based Inergy LP and LPG Services before mergers and sales.

In April of 2019, Forbes estimated the Royals to be worth $1 billion. When Glass purchased the club in 2000, he paid $96 million.

Before Glass became the owner, he was was appointed interim chairman and Chief Executive Officer upon the passing of Ewing Kauffman in 1993. He has overseen many struggles, but also the franchise's second World Series win in 2015 in what marked back-to-back championship appearances.
