Domestic car sales were down 41.09%

India’s domestic passenger vehicle sales fell for the tenth straight month in August, declining 31.57% to 1,96,524 units from 2,87,198 units in the year-ago period.

Domestic car sales were down 41.09% to 1,15,957 units as against 1,96,847 units in August 2018, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) released on Monday.

This is the worst-ever fall for both the categories since SIAM started recording the data in 1997-98.

Motorcycle sales last month declined 22.33% to 9,37,486 units as against 12,07,005 units a year earlier.

Total two-wheeler sales in August declined 22.24% to 15,14,196 units compared to 19,47,304 units in the year-ago month.

Sales of commercial vehicles were down 38.71% to 51,897 units in August, SIAM said.

Vehicle sales across categories registered a decline of 23.55% to 18,21,490 units from 23,82,436 units in August 2018, it added.

In fact, all vehicle categories witnessed decline in sales during the month.

Auto companies' heads urged New Delhi to revive the sector, crippled by sluggish demand resulting in hundreds of thousands of job cuts, at a conference last week.

Road and Transport minister Nitin Gadkari assured them that the government was working to help the sector and said he had asked the finance ministry to consider cutting taxes on petrol and diesel, as well as hybrid vehicles.

The decision is because of continued weak demand for its products

Commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland has declared production holidays at its various plants for September, due to continued weak demand for its products.

In a communique sent to stock exchanges, it said there would be 16 non-working days at its Ennore plant and five non-working days at the Hosur plants.

There will be 18 non-working days at its Pantnagar plant and 10 days each at its Alwar and Bhandara plants during the month, the company said.

Auto sales see record fall in August in two decades as crisis continues

Passenger vehicle sales plunged 31.57% year-on-year to 196,524 units in August, falling for the 10th straight month, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) data showed, while passenger car sales fell 41.09% to 115,957 units.

The crisis in the Indian auto sector is deepening. The monthly passenger vehicle and car sales recorded its steepest ever fall in August, a record fall in 10th straight month.

According to data released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Monday, passenger vehicle sales plunged 31.57% year-on-year to 196,524 units in August. Passenger car sales fell 41.09% to 115,957 units.

This is the worst-ever fall for both the categories since SIAM started recording the data in 1997-98. Truck and bus sales dropped 39%. Two-wheeler sales fell 22% to 1.5 million units.

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, had last week said it has suspended production at its Gurugram and Manesar plants in Haryana for two days. Maruti Suzuki has closed both plants simultaneously for two days for the first time.

The slump in auto sales had led to massive job loss in the sector. Automakers, parts manufacturers and dealers have laid off about 350,000 workers since April, Reuters reported.

Last week, transport minister Nitin Gadkari had assured automakers that there were no plans to ban petrol and diesel vehicles. Gadkari said the the auto sector is witnessing a slowdown due to the global economic factors and said the finance ministry will find out a solution. He also assured the auto sector that their demands for reducing the sales tax on petrol and diesel will also be taken up with the finance ministry.

Automakers are hoping to buck the trends during the festive season for a turnaround of fortunes. October-November usually witnesses a boost in auto sales. Sales during the festive season constitute almost a third of the vehicles sold in a year.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced some measures to address the slowdown in the auto industry. She lifted the ban on purchase of new vehicles by government departments and allowed an additional 15% depreciation on vehicles acquired from August to March 2020. She also announced that BS IV vehicles purchased till 2020 will remain in operation for the entire period of registration.

Auto Crisis: Passenger Vehicle Sales See Worst Ever Monthly Drop Since 1997-98

The Indian auto industry saw the worst drop as August 2019 saw a decline of 31.57 per cent for total passenger vehicle sales.

India's monthly passenger vehicle and car sales recorded their steepest fall ever in August, according to data released by a top industry body on Monday, underscoring the unprecedented slowdown in the sector. Last month, the sector recorded the worst decline since 1997-98, data put out by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed. The percentage sale of two-wheelers is at a three-year low. Overall passenger car sales dropped by a significant 31.57 per cent last month with 196,524 units sold compared to 287,198 units in August 2018.

The biggest hit was taken by the passenger car sales, which declined by a massive 41.09 per cent; 115,957 cars were sold in August this year compared to 196,847 sold in the same month last year.

Utility vehicles sales saw a smaller decline of just 2.2 per cent, with 71,478 units sold compared to 73,085 in August last year. The van segment, on the other hand, saw a massive drop of 47.36 per cent; 9,089 units were sold last month compared to 17,266 units sold exactly a year ago.

Two-wheeler sales too saw a steep decline of 22.24 per cent with 1,514,196 sold in August 2019 compared to 1,947,304 sold in August 2018. Scooters, motorcycles and mopeds saw a decline of 22 per cent, 22 per cent and 21 per cent. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles too saw a massive decline of 54.3 per cent with 15,573 units sold last month as compared to 34,073 units sold in August 2018. Light commercial vehicles saw a decline of 28.21 per cent with 36,324 units sold compared to 50,595 units in August 2018.

To sum it up, the Indian auto inc sold 9,732,040 units of vehicles in August 2019 compared to 11,570,401 units in August 2018, which is a decline of 15.89 per cent. It may not look like much but when you dig deeper, the rot is all the more evident and a segment-by-segment analysis reveals that almost every vehicle segment in India is taking a massive hit as far as sales are is concerned.

The data once again paints a bleak picture of an industry that was once a shining example of 'Make-In-India'.
