New Zealand's John Wright lauded as the man who discovered Jasprit Bumrah

Kiwi cricket legend John Wright is being hailed as the inspiration behind the emergence of India's Jasprit Bumrah into one of the world's finest fast bowlers on their tour of Australia.

Bumrah tore apart the home side in their first innings of the Boxing Day test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to guide India to the brink of an historic series victory in Australia.

He snared a career-best 6-33 off 15.5 overs as the Australians were skittled for 151 in their first innings, putting India in the box seat as the hosts chased an unlikely 399 for victory batting last. They were 138-5 in pursuit of the total midway through day four in Melbourne, with Bumrah snaring another 2-22 off 9 overs.

It was Wright, the former Black Caps opener and Indian national coach, who discovered Bumrah during his time coaching the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

The astute Kiwi had spotted the whippy quick bowler with the unusual action playing in a a T20 match in Ahmedabad in 2013 and immediately recommended the Indians sign him up as a project. He has now emerged from a limited-overs force into a legitimate test weapon in his debut year in the longest form of the game

Bumrah told Crictoday he remained indebted to Wright to this day for the opportunity the New Zealander provided him.

"I tell him every time I meet him. I thanked him again (when I was picked for India). I have told him many times that he has played a pivotal role in my career," said the fast bowler.

"Whatever I have achieved or reached it's because of him. If he hadn't come to watch that Mushtaq Ali tournament in Mumbai, I wouldn't have played IPL so early and subsequently everything which has happened in my life perhaps would not have fallen in place so smoothly."

Wright, watching his recruit's progress in Australia from his home in New Zealand, told the Bangalore Mirror that he had seen the raw potential in the young tearaway from the first time he laid eyes on him.

"He bowled fast yorkers with an interesting action. One of his deliveries hit the footmark and flew right over the head of keeper Parthiv Patel. It went for four byes. I thought, 'gosh, he has got a little bit of pace'," Wright told the Mirror.

"I then rang Rahul Sanghvi at Mumbai Indians and told him that I have seen this young lad and perhaps we we should sign him. We did."

But Wright deflected any credit for the bowler's emergence to the feet of the man who deserved it most.

"All the credit goes to him because it's OK being picked and identified but then it's up to the player to learn lessons and improve. I am enjoying his success in Australia," said the Kiwi.

"The great thing about him was his action and his pace. He can do some interesting things with the ball. He is not just a one trick bowler. He has got quite a few attacking weapons up his sleeve."

Bumrah's Melbourne demolition job was his third five-wicket haul in nine tests on the road through South Africa, England and Australia this year. It took him to 45 wickets at 21.24, and left former Australia captain Michael Clarke hailing him as the world's best bowler in the making.

"He must be a great guy to play with and to captain," said Clarke from India. "He doesn't mind the pressure or the expectations. He wants to learn and is a workhorse.

"[It won't be] too long before he will become the best bowler in the world."

Bumrah is ranked by the ICC as the world's best ODI bowler, but sits just 28th on the test ratings, Expect that to improve soon.
