it sounds odd. my surname is clearly telugu, although it doesn't signify any caste (as far as I know). 

we picked some oddball names for our kids, and they got used to it. even while growing up in India, they didn't feel any peer pressure about their names. so we stuck with it.

it'll sound like mark shankar pawanovich if I give my surname/name to my kids. lol.
