An IT professional who befriended an unknown person over LinkedIn fell prey to extortion after she realized the person duped him of more than one crore.

According to reports, the 31-year old believing the contact had sent her a gift parcel containing an iPhone, Rolex watch, costly perfumes and some British currency paid the calculated amount, New Indian Express reports.

She approached the cybercrime police when there was no sign of the parcel.

How it started

The victim said she had received a friend request who introduced himself as a pilot on her LinkedIn profile in the month of May.

He claimed to be working for British Airways. The two individuals soon exchanged their mobile numbers and started chatting over Whatsapp.

Once the man gained her confidence, he told her that he is sending her a gift parcel for which she made a payment of Rs 7 Lakh.

The individual texted her again claiming his father was suffering from cancer and that he is in urgent need of money followed by which she transferred Rs 94 lakh from her account to 11 different accounts as told by him.
