Baby boy beats the odds by waking from 5-day coma and smiling at his dad

A baby boy's incredible tale of survival has gone viral and is inspiring thousands to donate to his cause.

Emma Labuschagne, of Bristol, England, wrote on social media that her son, Michael, was born healthy in December of last year. However, at just 14 weeks old, he suffered sudden heart failure.

 

"We watched our baby breathless, gasping for air while his heart stopped and paramedics worked to save his life. In that moment I did not think Michael would make it through," Labuschagne wrote on a GoFundMe page. "We were told that even if he pulled through, he would not be the same baby."

Against the odds, Michael began to wake up.

"The first thing he did when he opened his beautiful brown eyes was smile at daddy," Labuschagne said.

Only 7% of patients recover from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Michael was soon diagnosed with a rare cardiac fibroma inside his heart. Surgery for Michael's condition is not available in the U.K., and the Labuschagne family is raising money to fly to Boston for surgery.

"Boston Children’s Hospital, ranked #1 pediatric hospital in the world, has quoted us $147,000 which converts to approximately £116,000 for the procedure. The cardiac surgeons at Boston are *Fact* the best cardiac surgeons in the world and they have done this operation several times. They are confident that they can drastically improve, or even cure, his condition by resecting the tumor," the GoFundMe page states.

The family has raised £28,000 so far.

"He currently has an internal pacemaker and defibrillator, but this has caused physical development delay and is currently at max threshold, which means it is not working as effectively as it should," the fundraising page reads. "The dream is to get him to Boston as soon as we can. Every day we worry if it will be our last with Michael."
