Telugu actress Geetanjali Ramakrishna dies at 72 in Hyderabad

Veteran Telugu actress Geetanjali Ramakrishna breathed her last due to cardiac arrest on October 30.

 

Popular Telugu actress Geetanjali Ramakrishna passed away in the wee hours of October 30 due to cardiac arrest. Reportedly, she was getting treated at a private hospital in Hyderabad when she breathed her last. The cremation and final rites of Geetanjali will take place today (October 31) evening.

She had an illustrious career spanning nearly six decades by doing movies not just in Telugu, but also in other South Indian languages. Her husband, Ramakrishna, a notable actor in Tollywood, died in 2001 and they are survived by son Adith Srinivas, who is also an actor.

It was legendary actor-politician Jr NTR who had introduced Geetanjali as an actress in his directorial Seetharama Kalyanam, which released in 1961. Shen then went on to prove her mettle as an actress in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.

 

Geetanjali, who was born in Kakinada, was originally named as Mani. She worked in a Hindi film titled Parasmani, which was produced by Lakshmikant and Pyarelal. Since her name was present in the title, the makers rechristened her as Geetanjali.

Her career was at the peak when she married actor Ramakrishna, who has acted with her in several films.

Some of her popular works include Seetharama Kalyanam, Deivathin Deivam, Swapnangal, Parasmani, Gudachari 116 and Bobbili Yuddham. She played a pivotal role in Tamannaah's That Is Mahalakshmi, which is an official remake of Hindi flick, Queen. That Is Mahalakshmi is yet to see the light of the day.

Veteran actress Geetanjali passed away due to cardiac arrest. She breathed her last at 11:22 pm on 30th October. She was undergoing treatment at a private hospital near Film Nagar in Hyderabad where she breathed her last.

Geetanjali was rushed to film Nagar’ Apollo Hospital right away after she fell into sudden illness. In spite of doctors’ immense efforts to save her life, she passed away in hospital.

Geetanjali hailed from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh and in her almost six decades-long careers, Geetanjali had worked in over 500 movies in the Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi film industry.

The last rites of the actress Geetanjali will be performed today evening. Ever since the tragic news came out, her fans and movie lovers have been taking to social media to express their grief. The tributes have already started to come in from all corners of the film fraternity.

Geetanjali had made her debut in the Telugu film industry with Seetarama Kalyanam, which was released in 1961. The mythological film was helmed by N T Rama Rao. Her popular movies are Dr. Chakravarthy, Letha Manasulu, Bobbili Yuddham, Devatha, Letha Manasulu, Gudachari 116 and Sambarala Rambabu.

Veteran actress Geetanjali was also a member of the Nandi Award committee.

Her original name was Mani. During the peak of her film career, Geetanjali got married to fellow actor Ramakrishna after sharing the screen with him in a few movies. After tying the knot, Geethanjali had taken a break from work but later she made her comeback as a character artist. She will be seen in milky siren starrer Tamannah Bhatia’ That is Mahalakshmi. Her son Adith Srinivas also tested his luck as an actor with the film Bhuma in 2008.

Veteran film actor Geetanjali, 72, passed away during the early hours of Thursday. She died from a cardiac arrest while she was under medical care at a private hospital in Film Nagar in Hyderabad.

 

Born in Kakinada as Mani, she made her screen debut at a very young age. It is the makers of Hindi film Parasmani (1963) who rechristened her as Geetanjali as the title of the film also had ‘mani’ in it. She made her Tollywood debut in the early 60s, which was considered as the “golden period” of the Telugu film industry. She entered the industry with the mythological drama Seetharama Kalyanam, which was directed by matinee idol, NT Rama Rao. It was a landmark film in Telugu cinema as for the first time a leading superstar, NTR, played the role of a villain, Ravana. Geetanjali was seen in the role of Sita.

In a career spanning about six decades, she acted in more than 500 films, including Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. However, she did the maximum number of films of her career in Telugu. Some of her biggest hits include Dr Chakravarthy, Murali Krishna, Abbayigaru Ammayigaru, Kaalam Marindi, Gudachari 116 and Sambarala Rambabu.

While in Telugu she acted alongside the likes of NTR and Akkineni Nageswara Rao, she also shared screen space with film legends like MG Ramachandran and Gemini Ganesan.

Geetanjali married her co-star Ramakrishna. She took a long break after her marriage and returned to acting in the early 90s. Following which, she essayed several roles in the supporting cast. Her last film was That Is Mahalakshmi, which is the remake of Bollywood hit Queen.

Geetanjali is survived by her son, Adith Srinivas, who is also an actor.

సీనియర్‌ నటి గీతాంజలి గురువారం కన్నుమూశారు. గుండెపోటుతో హైదరాబాద్‌ ఫిలింనగర్‌లోని అపోలో ఆస్పత్రిలో ఆమె చికిత్స పొందుతూ తుదిశ్వాస విడిచారు. తెలుగుతోపాటు తమిళం, మలయాళం, కన్నడ, హిందీ చిత్రాల్లోనూ నటించిన గీతాంజలి.. ఎన్టీఆర్‌ దర్శకత్వంలో ఆయనే కథానాయుడిగా నటించిన సీతారాముల కళ్యాణం ద్వారా వెండితెరకు పరిచమయ్యారు. అన్ని భాషల్లోనూ 500కు పైగా చిత్రాల్లో నటించారు. కలవారి కోడలు, డాక్టర్‌ చక్రవర్తి, లేతమనసులు, బొబ్బిలియుద్ధం, ఇల్లాలు, దేవత, గూఢచారి116, కాలం మారింది, శ్రీ శ్రీ మర్యాదరామన్న, నిర్దోషి, మాయాజాలం, గ్రీకువీరుడు తదితర చిత్రాల్లో నటించారు. తొలి చిత్రం సీతారాముల కళ్యాణంలో గీతాంజలి నటనకు ప్రేక్షకులు బ్రహ్మరథం పట్టారు. ఆమె ఎన్టీఆర్‌కు పోటీగా నటించి మెప్పించారు. 

తూర్పుగోదావరి జిల్లా కాకినాడలో శ్రీరామమూర్తి, శ్వామసుందరి దంపతులకు జన్మించారు. కాకినాడలోని సెయింట్ జోసెఫ్ కాన్వెంటులో కొన్నేళ్లు చదివిన గీతాంజలి. ఐదేళ్ల వయసు నుంచే గీతాంజలి తన అక్క స్వర్ణతో పాటు గంధర్వ నాట్యమండలిలో లక్ష్మారెడ్డి, శ్రీనివాసన్ ల వద్ద నాట్యం నేర్చుకున్నారు. ఆరో ఏట నుంచి అక్కతో కలిసి నాట్య ప్రదర్శనలు ప్రారంభించారు. గీతాంజలి అసలు పేరు మణి. 1963లో పారస్‌మణి అనే హిందీ చిత్రంలో నటిస్తుండగా ఆ చిత్ర నిర్మాతలు లక్ష్మీకాంత్-ప్యారేలాల్ సినిమా టైటిల్లోనూ మణి ఉంది కాబట్టి ఈమెకు గీతాంజలి అని పేరు సూచించారు. 

 

 

 

ఆ పేరు సినీరంగంలో అలానే స్థిరపడిపోయింది. సహనటుడు రామకృష్ణతో వివాహం తర్వాత సినిమాలకు కొంత విరామం ఇచ్చారు. క్యారక్టర్‌ ఆర్టిస్ట్‌గా మారిన ఆమె పెళ్లైన కొత్తలో,మాయాజాలం, భాయ్‌, గ్రీకువీరుడు తదితర చిత్రాల్లో నటించారు. గీతాంజలి చివరి చిత్రం తమన్నా కథానాయికగా రూపొందుతున్న దటీజ్‌ మహాలక్ష్మి. రాజకీయాల్లోకి వచ్చిన గీతాంజలి 2009 ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్ శాసనసభ ఎన్నికల సమయంలో తెలుగుదేశం పార్టీలో చేరారు. 

ఎన్టీఆర్‌ను తన సినీ గురువుగా గీతాంజలి చెప్పుకునేవారు. సీతారాముల కళ్యాణం సినిమాలో కథానాయికగా తనను ఎంపికచేసి సీత పాత్ర ద్వారా తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకు పరిచయం చేశారని అనేవారు. ఆ పాత్ర వల్లే తనకంటూ తెలుగులో ఓ ప్రత్యేకత వచ్చిందని ప్రతి ఇంటర్వ్యూలోనూ గీతాంజలి తలచుకునేవారు.
