Telangana asks Centre to expedite transfer of Defence lands

KTR urges Rajnath to transfer 105.77 acre for SRDP works

Hyderabad: MA&UD Minister KT Rama Rao on Wednesday urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to expedite the transfer of 105.77 acre of Defence land to the Telangana government so that works under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) on National Highway 44 and Hyderabad-Ramagundam Rajiv Rahadari can be taken up.

The issue has been hanging fire since 2017 despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi assuring Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao that the land would be transferred to the State government. Subsequently, in 2018, then Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman again assured Rama Rao that the Centre would hand over the land.

Rama Rao, who met Singh in New Delhi and submitted two memorandums seeking the land, said: “As part of the Prime Minister’s vision to improve the road network to boost economic development of the nation, Telangana has taken up SRDP, which includes, inter alia, improvement of the Nagpur-Hyderabad sector on National Highway 44 with a 11-km elevated corridor. This requires 39.40 acre of Defence land along NH-44”. Stating that this would improve connectivity between Nagpur and Hyderabad, the Minister pointed out that it would also benefit the Secunderabad Cantonment area by decongesting it.

In another memorandum, the Rama Rao sought speedy alienation of the State’s request for about 66.37 acre of Defence land for improvement of the Ramagundam-Hyderabad sector on the outskirts of the State capital.

SRDP, he said, envisages improvement of Rajiv Rahadari from Jubilee Bus Stand to Thumukunta, covering a stretch of 19 km, with a four-km elevated corridor that would require 66.37 acre of Defence land, he said. This, the Minister pointed out, would improve connectivity between the entire North Telangana (including Karimnagar, Ramagundam and other important cities) and Hyderabad. This corridor too would greatly help in decongesting the Secunderabad Cantonment area, Rama Rao said.

The Chief Minister, in a letter to the Defence Minister dated May 2, 2017, requested the Centre to transfer the Defence land, but no orders were received so far, Rama Rao said. In a tweet, after meeting Singh, Rama Rao said: Met with Hon’ble Defence Minister Sri Rajnath Singhji and requested him to transfer lands to enable State to construct skyways on two important stretches, Hyderabad-Nagpur NH and Hyderabad-Ramagundam Highway”.
