VIJAYAWADA: Two more suicides related to sand shortage have been reported from Guntur district in the last two days, taking the toll to six in a span of one week.

One Gurram Nagaraju hanged himself on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. The 30-year-old, who had migrated from Eluru in West Godavari district in search of work, used to work as a watchman in an apartment. His wife Vani said while she worked as a maid in the apartment, Nagaraju used to go for  works. However, he was struggling to find work for the past few months as constructions have been stalled due to non-availability of sand.

He also got addicted to alcohol after sitting idle and used to fight with his wife regularly. Tadepalli inspector B Anka Rao said on Friday night, Nagaraju came home in an inebriated state and went inside the house to sleep, while the children and Vani slept outside. On Saturday morning, his family found him hanging from the ceiling. In another incident at Ponnur, one Adapa Ravi, who used to work as a construction labourer, committed by consuming pesticide. However, no case has been registered as his family members have not filed a complaint with the police.

TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu tweeted on Saturday he was pained to know about the suicide of Nagaraju. He further alleged that 10  have committed suicide in the span of one week across the state but the state government is unmoved over the issue.

In October, three unemployed construction workers — Polepalli Venkatesh, Naga Brahmaji, Nagur Vali and R Ravi — committed suicide in Guntur district. Three weeks ago Venkatesh had shot a video, explaining the difficulty he and his family were facing due to unemployment in the last four months.

As the video begins, Venkatesh says he will die by tomorrow. He says he has no skills other than construction work. He was found hanging by his wife Raashi in his room. It was Venkatesh’s wife who shared the video via WhatsApp and it went viral on social media.
