Hyderabad: Commuters heading towards Hitec City from Mehdipatnam end through Biodiversity junction can now pass comfortably devoid of any traffic hurdles en route as the unidirectional flyover from Mehditpatnam towards Kukatpally becomes operational from Monday.

Built with a cost of Rs 69.47 crore, this will be fourth structure to be completed under Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) to ease traffic congestion in the city’s IT corridor. Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao will open the structure for traffic.

The 990-metre-long flyover will commence from Raidurg Police Station on the Mehdipatnam end and drop near IKEA showroom towards Kukatpally end. Given the presence of a large number of IT and corporate companies, Biodiversity junction witnesses heavy vehicular movement with traffic snarls being a common woe. It is also used by motorists to pass to reach National Highway (JNTU end) from old Mumbai highway.

The peak-hour traffic at the junction as per 2015 survey was 14,001 Passenger Car Units (PCUs) and it increased to 22,400 PCUs this year and is expected to escalate to 30,678 PCUs by 2035.

Accordingly, to ensure conflict-free movement for motorists through the junction, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) constructed the second-level at the junction.

70% first-level flyover works done

In addition to this facility, the municipal corporation is also constructing a first-level flyover to further ease traffic congestion at the junction which facilitates traffic flow from Gachibowli end towards Mehdipatnam.

It is being constructed with a cost of nearly Rs 35 crore and already 70 per cent of the works were completed. With land acquisition process being completed, a target has been set to complete the rest of the works in five months, said a senior official from GHMC.

Foundation at Gachibowli junction

Apart from throwing open the unidirectional flyover at Biodiversity junction, the MA&UD Minister will also lay foundation stones for three projects on Monday. These include construction of a second-level six-lane flyover from Kondapur end towards ORR at Gachibowli junction, a four-lane bidirectional flyover from Shilpa Layout to Gas Godown, and a vehicular underpass across the existing Gas Godown road. These three projects are planned at a cost of Rs 330 crore.
