Hyderabad: T-Works, the Government arm working to create a culture of hobbyists, makers and innovators, is readying its new premises at Raidurg near Gachibowli.

The new building, which has an outlay of Rs 70 crore, will be 78,000 sqft in the first phase. The land required for this is given by TSIIC.

“The outer shell of the building is ready and we are now working on the interiors. The premises will be ready in about five months,” said Sujai Karampuri, Chief Executive Officer of T-Works.

T-Works will have facilities for wood working, welding, sheet metal machining, PCB fabrication, pottery, finish shop, 3D printing and e-workstations. “Phase I is good enough for the entire thing to get going. It is a big initiative of Telangana Government and its benefits will come gradually. But, when they come they will be manifold,” he said.

“It will some take time to get the likes of Ciscos, Apples or Teslas. But we have begun the journey in that direction. There is a need to create an ecosystem that values innovation. Once the Phase 1 is ready many companies will partner us,” he said. Now, Mentor Graphics and Qualcomm have agreed to be partners.

“Idea is basic for a new innovation and all things needed for an inventor will be provided by us,” he said adding that T-Works will give the required equipment, software, advise, expertise, market access, funding and do handholding.

T-Works now ten fellowships, selected from over 400 applications. “We have someone who had earlier worked with Apple. There is one person who made a solar car and travelled along the coastal AP. There are people who worked on submarines and drones too. One made an octacopter and flew it. He came back and joined us,” he said about the makers currently engaged with T-Works.

Phase Zero of T-Works is underway. Key focus areas include working with plastic, metal working, electronics and wood. Among others, its members have already created a 3D printer, a FM radio, rocking chair and others from the scratch.

The centre will work to lower barriers for prototype development, create a community of volunteers, engineers, artists, designers, service providers .It will facilitate members to showcase products and skills. It will aid in transition from prototyping to manufacturing through collaboration. Getting into mass manufacturing is not on the agenda. It will not seek equity in any of the companies or entities that it works with nor will be holding, creating or selling intellectual property, Karampuri explained.

Don't know how far these initiatives are helping but at least we are creating infrastructure needed for the next few decades....

Any huge successful startups which came out from thub so far ?

I think blore is still the king when it comes to startups eco system.

In 2018, in all, 32 startups in Hyd raised $400.95 million. In 2015, this number was $43 million across 33 deals. The mix across stages also was healthy, with 2018 seeing 15 pre-Series A deals, two PE rounds, four Series A rounds, and one each in Series B, C and E. This is a big change from 2017, when no Hyderabad-based companies raised Series B, C, D or E rounds. And in 2015, while there were 22 Pre-series A rounds, there were few others in the growth stage.

Hyd has less than 5% of all the start-up funding and a long way to go. $12 billion dollars of investement in startups last year Hyd recieved only $400 million. Good thing our share is so less that we have room to grow

When it comes to growth, Hyderabad has experienced a variety of growth...

Initial thrust will be slow and Hyderabad has actually lagged behind during the early phases of race but when we did, we literally raced ahead much faster to reach up to the pace of other cities...

This is a blessing...

Bangalore is still the king and will reign for long and no question about it.

Hyderabad just started to catch up with the pace...but in a decade, we can expect to see the pace Bangalore is experience now.
