TATA is structured in a way where a large part of shares are held by a foundation and it is the TATA group that donates, not Ratan Tata.

Charities are usually tax saving instrument with some marginal good effort in the side. You are running a corporate which makes 100 rupees profit. Indian government takes 30 rupees right away as corporate tax. Later you give yourself 70 rs as extra salary earnings - indian gov t takes another 30 percent as personal income tax. Say of the remanining 52 you spend 40 on luxuries , indian govt again takes 28 percent as gst tax.

so to save all this they put corporate earning in charity tax free and use that money for family expenses and vacations as “charity funding” . Ofcourse some money does go to actual charity to continue all this.

they are not doing anything wrong though and I support tata.
