I like solving problems, but you need to analyze the problem in question and come up with an approach and hypothesis and reason as to why you think your approach will solve the problem in question. Otherwise you will go nowhere.

BTW if you are in Sunnyvale, UCSF has a good pharmacy program.

The contribution of your PhD to the field of science will be as significant as a fart in the middle of a tornado. Don't start a PhD to discover something. Do a PhD because you want to learn the approach to pursue research and understand science. You learn how to do research in a PhD. That's the point.
