Actually there will be refugee status for them. Assam is protesting the entirety of the bill, they don’t want any of them. There are close to 2000 troops there right now with over 1800 people detained. 
 

Muslims are definitely protesting discrimination though. May be it is pent up anger for article 370 and Ram Mandir. Not much happened back then -  only sporadic protests. Now they can go against this bill as it can be deemed as unconstitutional. By protesting this one, they can get back at what happened over the last few months.

these protests are also for muslims reclaiming their political dignity. 

BJP has already spoken about implementing NRC all across India. Muslim citizens can lose their status if they keep quiet for long.

finally muslims are protesting against this govt. They should have done it on 2014 on his first day itself.
