Injury rules Rohit Sharma out of remainder of New Zealand tour

India have suffered a big setback ahead of the ODI and Test series against New Zealand, with Rohit Sharma ruled out of the remainder of the tour because of a calf injury.

The injury took place when Sharma, leading India with Virat Kohli rested, was batting in the fifth and final T20I in Mount Maunganui on Sunday. He was on 54 at the time, and was treated on the field by the team's physio, but opted to continue batting. He hit a six, off Ish Sodhi, but was forced to retire hurt soon after, having reached 60.

Sharma is one of the primary openers across formats for India, and the selectors are likely to look for his replacement(s) in the India A contingent, which is currently playing a four-day series against New Zealand A with the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill in their ranks.

The three-match ODI series against New Zealand starts on Wednesday in Hamilton, followed by matches in Auckland and Mount Maunganui. The final leg of the Indian tour, comprising two Tests, will commence on February 21 in Wellington and move to Christchurch, where the second Tests starts on February 29.

Mark Chapman replaces injured Kane Williamson for first two India ODIs

1214299_1296x729.jpg&w=920&h=518&scale=c

Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the first two ODIs against India as he continues to recover from an inflamed AC joint niggle in his left-shoulder. Tom Latham will lead in his absence and Mark Chapman will take his place in the side.

While X-ray scans have "cleared him of anything serious", Williamson is expected to ease himself back into training with the aim to be ready for the third ODI on February 11.

"It's best for his recovery that he avoids aggravating the joint for the next few days," team physio Vijay Vallabh said in a statement. "He will continue his fitness training sessions throughout the week and will start batting again on Friday with the prospect of being available for game three next Tuesday."

Williamson's injury is an opportunity for Chapman to impress. The 25-year-old former Hong Kong batsman who now plays for Auckland Aces is coming off a first-class century in the drawn first four-dayer against India A in Christchurch last week.

Prior to that, he had scored a match-winning century for New Zealand A in their 3-2 one-day series win over India A.

This will be a comeback of sorts for Chapman, the left-hand batsman who last played for New Zealand two years ago. He had a forgettable debut series against England where he made scores of 1, 8 and 0.

"It's disappointing for Kane, but with so much important cricket still ahead this summer we must take a safety first approach," chief selectoe Gavin Larsen said. "It's great to welcome Mark back into the one-day unit off the back of consecutive centuries for New Zealand A against a strong India A side.

"Mark's a versatile player who can cover multiple batting positions and his fielding is a real upshot to have in the squad."

Williamson injured himself during the third T20I last week and subsequently missed the remaining two matches. Tim Southee led New Zealand in his absence.

India in New Zealand - Prithvi Shaw returns to Test squad, Mayank Agarwal in for ODIs

Prithvi Shaw has been included in the 16-man India Test squad for the two-match series in New Zealand, which also features the fit-again Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma.

However, Ishant's participation will be subject to a fitness clearance, following a grade-three tear in an ankle during the Ranji Trophy in January. He is currently in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

With Rohit Sharma ruled out, the toss up for the second opener to partner Mayank Agarwal could be between Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw. Shaw and Agarwal are also part of the ODI squad.

Gill has the backing of runs under him, having smashed 83 and an unbeaten 204 for India A in the first four-day fixture in Christchurch against New Zealand A. Shaw, meanwhile, has been in good limited-overs form, having impressed in the one-day leg of the India A series in New Zealand.

Meanwhile, left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav was left out of the squad altogether, with R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja picked as the frontline spin options alongside five pacers. Interestingly, almost exactly a year ago, on February 5, 2019, India head coach Ravi Shastri had called Kuldeep "our primary overseas spinner" in Test cricket, following his five-wicket haul in the Sydney Test in January. It remains his last Test appearance. Navdeep Saini, who is uncapped in Tests, was also rewarded with a call-up. Rishabh Pant retained his place alongside first-choice Wriddhiman Saha, who has recovered from a finger injury he sustained during the Bangladesh Test in Kolkata.

Shaw had last played Test cricket in October 2018. After cracking a 154-ball 134 on debut in Rajkot, Shaw was selected for the following Australia tour, but an ankle injury sidelined him from the entire series. Later in 2019, Shaw was suspended for a doping violation. As a result, he missed the West Indies tour and then the home series against West Indies and Bangladesh.

Upon returning to action in the Ranji Trophy, Shaw sustained a shoulder injury, but recovered in time, and proved his form and fitness for India A on their shadow tour of New Zealand. Earlier during the Ranji Trophy, he had hit a career-best 202 against Baroda, setting up a massive victory for Mumbai.

Bumrah, too, had missed the home Test series against South Africa and Bangladesh with injury, and eased his way back into action during the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. In January, he had also been pulled out of the Ranji Trophy, but has now regained his rhythm after playing a starring role in India's 5-0 sweep of New Zealand in the T20I series. Bumrah will also be in action in the three-match ODI series, which starts on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane will tune up for the Tests by turning out for India A in the second four-day fixture, which begins on February 7.

The first Test will begin in Wellington on February 21 and the second in Christchurch on February 29.

NZ vs IND: Virat Kohli Clears Way For Prithvi Shaw To Make ODI Debut, KL Rahul To Bat In Middle Order

NZ vs IND: Virat Kohli said KL Rahul will keep wickets and bat at number five like he did during the Australia series.

India are set to field two debutant openers, Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal, in the first ODI against New Zealand here on Wednesday after skipper Virat Kohli confirmed that KL Rahul will continue to bat in the middle-order. Regular opener Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the New Zealand T20s and ODIs last month after hurting his left shoulder during the home ODIs against Australia. His partner and India vice-captain Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the three games and the following Tests on Tuesday due to a left calf muscle strain, necessitating a complete change in the opening combination.

Rahul will keep wickets and bat at number five like he did during the Australia series, Kohli said on Tuesday.

"Prithvi's definitely going to start and whoever the replacement is, we'll ask for an opener (which has already been decided with Agarwal replacing Rohit). KL will bat in the middle-order. We want him to get accustomed to that role and keep as well," said Kohli.

Kohl said Rohit's absence doesn't hamper the team's preparations as there are not many ODI series lined up in the year of T20 World Cup.

"I understand it's an unfortunate situation that Rohit can't be a part of this series. When you talk about one-day cricket and T20 cricket and Test cricket now, he's one guy who's always on the list first. But the thing is that we don't have any one-day tournaments to look forward to.

"It's if anything an ideal time for him to go away and rectify this as soon as he can and come back. He played the T20I series, so from the team's balance point of view heading into the World Cup year, it doesn't really hamper the combination as far as the T20s are concerned," he said.

New Zealand will also be missing Kane Williamson and also pacers Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson.

Kohli said ODIs this year are all about opportunities to different players across both sides.

"Quite surprising (that Williamson is missing) because he said he felt better. But I know with the AC joint (left shoulder), I've had it as well. Unless you get into the action, it's very difficult to make a judgement of how much pain you feel. Especially for a batsman, if the shoulder is not right, it can hurt you.

"So I'm sure he's not in a shape to take the field. As I said, one-day games this year is all about whoever gets the opportunity what they can do in the team combination and not necessarily about whether the chances of winning or losing wary or not. That's what we are looking at as well," said the India captain.

Kohli said injuries to Dhawan and Rohit are a good opportunity for Shaw and Agarwal.

"Rohit's injury is unfortunate but someone who steps in, it's a chance for that guy to experience this kind of pressure and expectation, and for us to see who are the guys that cope with it. Kane has done it so many times, and you know what he can do.

"So someone who gets the chance, it'll be an opportunity for the team to see how he copes with that pressure. I see it that way. I see it as an opportunity for others rather than looking at it negatively," he added.
