President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Netaji

Subhas Chandra Bose on his 133rd birth anniversary.

Citing an entry from Netaji's father Janakinath Bose's diary on the birth of his son, Modi referred to Subhas Chandra Bose as " a valorous freedom fighter and thinker who devoted his life towards one great cause- India’s freedom."

Netaji was among the most popular leaders of the Indian National Congress in the 1930s, and went on to become its president in 1938 and '39. However he was ousted from the party following differences with some of the top leadership.

He escaped from house arrest in 1940 and escaped to Germany. As Germany's position weakened in the secong World War, Bose became keen to move to southeast Asia. He landed in Japanese held Sumatra in 1943.

The Provisional Government of Free India, presided by Bose, was formed in the Japanese-occupied Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

With Japanese support, Bose revamped the Indian National Army (INA), then composed of Indian soldiers of the British Indian army who had been captured in the Battle of Singapore.

The INA's first commitment was in the Japanese thrust towards Eastern Indian frontiers of Manipur. INA's special forces were extensively involved in operations behind enemy lines in the Japanese thrust towards Imphal and Kohima, along with the Burmese National Army.

On the Indian mainland, an Indian Tricolour, modelled after that of the Indian National Congress, was raised for the first time in the town of Moirang, in Manipur.

Researches on his death remain inconclusive. In the consensus of scholarly opinion, Bose's death occurred from third-degree burns on 18 August 1945 after his overloaded Japanese plane crashed in Taiwan.
