Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, on January 27, called the planned privatisation of Air India ;anti-national’ and threatened court proceedings against the government.

"We cannot sell our family silver," Swamy said on Twitter.

One Twitter user pointed out that the national carrier is struggling financially, to which Swamy responded "The Budget is also in deficit. Why not auction our government?".

The government released the Expression of Interest (EoI) document for Air India on January 27, formally beginning the process of selling its entire 100 percent stake in the airline.

The proposed privatisation of Air India is expected to help the government meet its disinvestment target of Rs 1.05 lakh crore for the current fiscal.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Govt has invited bids to sell 100% stake in national carrier Air India
  • BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has called the move anti-national, and threatened to go to court
  • Congress has said the govt has no money and is out to sell all assets

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has joined the Opposition bandwagon in slamming the government's move to sell 100 per cent stake of the national carrier Air India. Congress has said Modi government has no money and it is selling all assets.

In a tweet, Subramanian Swamy has said he will be forced to move the court. He has also called the decision "anti-national".

"Air India disinvestment process restarts today. THIS DEAL IS WHOLLY ANTI NATIONAL and I WILL FORCED TO GO TO COURT. WE CANNOT SELL OUR FAMILY SILVER (sic)," said Swamy.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Kapil Sibal also hit out at the government in a press conference and said, "When governments don't have money this is what they do. Govt of India has no money, growth is less than 5% and millions of rupees outstanding under MNREGA. This is what they will do, sell all the valuable assets we have."

The government on Monday announced sale of 100 per cent stake in debt-laden Air India as it issued the preliminary bid document for the strategic disinvestment with the deadline for submitting expression of interest set as March 17.

As part of the strategic disinvestment, Air India would also sell 100 per cent stake in low-cost airline Air India Express and 50 per cent shareholding in joint venture AISATS, as per bid document issued on Monday.

Management control of the airline would also be transferred to the successful bidder.

The government has set March 17 as the deadline for submitting the expression of interest (EoI).

he's right. I dont think selling Air India is a wise move. They should instead keep targets and make them compete with Private Airlines and check feasibility first. Anni ammeskuni pothe Corporate galla chetullo chippakudu tinali common people futurelo.
