Centre Not To Stall Council Abolition |

The decision of the YSR Congress party government led by chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy to abolish the state legislative council may not face much hurdles from the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre, if the sources in the national capital of Delhi are to be believed.

Though the Centre is unlikely to introduce a bill on the abolition of AP legislative council in the immediate budget session of the parliament, it might also not defer the bill the same indefinitely.

Apparently, the Narendra Modi government is understood to have given its assurance to the Jagan Mohan Reddy government that it would take a call on the legislative council abolition at the earliest.

This is because the Centre is generally in favour of abolition of legislative councils in the states to avoid confrontation with the legislative assemblies.

That is precisely why the Centre is not keen on considering the request by as many as 10 states to revive the legislative councils.

The proposals are before the standing committee of the parliament and if it recommends abolition of Upper Houses all over the country, then Andhra Pradesh will also get rid of the council. It is only a matter of time that the Centre will take a decision.

BJP national spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP GVL Narasimha Rao, who has been generally differing with his party leaders in Andhra Pradesh on many issues, also indirectly supported the abolition of legislative council, though state BJP president Kanna Lakshminarayana has strongly opposed it.

GVL said on Wednesday that the Centre does not see the abolition of the council from a political angle.

"The process will be carried forward according to the constitution, and there is no such thing as delaying or hastening the bill in any which way," he opined.

"Some are deliberately misleading the subject, which is supposed to be dealt constitutionally," GVL said.
