New Delhi: Justice Kurian Joseph, a former judge of the Supreme Court said that life imprisonment without remission is a stronger deterrent than the death penalty. The retired judge supported senior lawyer Indira Jaising who had urged Nirbhaya's mother to forgive the six men convicted of gang-raping her daughter.

Joseph said, "Death penalties have not helped curb such crime and this is the land of Gandhi Ji who said an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Desmond Tutu once said to take a life when a life has been lost is revenge, not justice."

The retired judge said that in most cases, people forget the offences after the execution of the convicts. He also supported the argument that the four convicts in the Nirbhaya case are too young to be hanged. He said that the chance to reform should be provided to the four men.

In January this year, Indira Jaising took to Twitter and asked Nirbhaya's mother to forgive the men who were convicted of gangraping her daughter. In her tweet, Jaising wrote, "While I fully identify with the pain of Asha Devi, I urge her to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini and she didn't not want the death penalty for her. We are with you but against the death penalty. (sic). "

In her tweet, Jaising asked Nirbhaya's mother to follow Sonia Gandhi's example and said that she should forgive the convicts like the Congress veteran forgave the woman who assassinated her husband. The four men - Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Kumar Gupta and Akshay Thakur will be hanged on Saturday. A dummy execution will be performed by hangman Pawan Jallad before the actual hanging. The four men will be hanged simultaneously.
