Rescues and evacuations are underway in New Zealand due to flooding

Around 500 people were trapped at the scenic Milford Sound fiord on the South Island overnight, as heavy rains caused road blockages. In addition, 30 hikers will be evacuated from Lake Howden Hut in Fiordland National Park. New Zealand authorities declared a state of emergency Monday for the area.

"About 70 'stragglers', located on the Te Anau side of the Homer Tunnel (State Highway 94), were evacuated by helicopter although nearly 500, including tourists and about 300 staff, remained trapped in Milford Sound last night." — The New Zealand Herald
