A surge in deadly coronavirus cases outside China is raising concerns that the outbreak has reached a new stage and could continue its global spread to even more vulnerable countries.

In the central Chinese province of Hubei, where the virus is believed to have originated, the number of cases appears to be stabilizing, according to government figures. But the number of people infected elsewhere in the world is rising quickly, with clusters in South Korea, Italy, Iran and a cruise ship docked in Japan. The number of infected people in South Korea jumped to over 1,000 Wednesday, and the first U.S. military soldier reportedly tested positive there. The country currently has the largest cluster of virus cases outside of mainland China.

As of Wednesday, more than 2,900 cases of the virus, officially called COVID-19, have been reported outside of mainland China, where the overwhelming majority of the 80,000 cases have been located since officials first discovered the disease in December. The number of deaths outside mainland China has also increased, including 16 in Iran, 11 in South Korea and 10 in Italy as of Tuesday afternoon.

In Iran, the head of the country’s counter-coronavirus task force has contracted the virus, highlighting the challenges authorities are facing to contain its spread. A day prior to testing positive with the virus, Iraj Harirchi, the task force director, was seen sweating and coughing at a press conference.

In a news conference Monday, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the organization is “worried about the situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran and in Italy.”

Still, the outbreak has not yet reached the level of pandemic, Tedros said. Apandemic is an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
