India's testing capacity has increased, says Centre

"The testing capacity has increased in the country through 435 government laboratories and 189 private laboratories (total of 624 labs). Cumulatively, 32,42,160 samples have been tested so far for COVID-19, whereas, 1,16,041 samples were tested on Tuesday," a statement by the Union health ministry said on Wednesday.

Recovery rate stands at 42.4% says Centre

The Union health ministry on Wednesday said that of a total of 1,51,767 COVID-19 cases reported in the country so far, 64,426 persons have been cured and the recovery rate is pegged at 42.4 percent.

"The fatality rate is 2.86 percent whereas the world average is 6.36 percent," the statement said.

Nepal reports 114 new COVID-19 cases today

Nepal reports highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases with 114 new patients over the last 24 hours. Total cases now stand at 886, the Nepal health Ministry said.

COVID-19 cases in Kerala cross 1,000 with 40 new reported today

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that 40 new corona virus cases reported in the state on Wednesday. Of these, nine returned from abroad, 16 returned from Maharashtra, five from Tamil Nadu and three from Delhi.

The total number of cases in the state are 1,004, of which 445 are active cases.

He added that till Tuesday, 173 Keralites have died due to COVID-19 in various countries.

"With people returning to the state, Kerala has entered the next phase of COVID-19 prevention and containment. There is a spike in the number of cases," he said.

817 new COVID-19 cases reported in Tamil Nadu today

The Tamil Nadu government said that 817 people tested positive for corona virus in the state on Wednesday, and six deaths were also reported. Additionally, 567 people have been discharged on Wednesday.

The total number of cases in the state stands at 18,545, including 133 deaths and 9,909 discharged.

Study says social distancing norms of 6 feet insufficient, virus can travel nearly 20 feet

 

Scientists have modelled the spread of infectious droplets from coughing, sneezing, and breathing under different atmospheric conditions, and found that the novel coronavirus can spread up to three times further in cold and humid weather.

According to the researchers, including those from the University of California (UC) Santa Barbara in the US, droplets carrying the virus can travel up to 20 feet, making the current social distancing norms of six feet insufficient to contain its spread.

Based on previous research, they said as many as 40,000 respiratory droplets can be generated by sneezing, coughing, and even normal talking, with initial speeds ranging from a few metres per second to more than a hundred meters per second.

MP Raj Bhavan declared COVID-19 containment zone as 6 test positive

The district administration of Bhopal on Wednesday declared Madhya Pradesh Raj Bhavan, the residence of the state Governor, as a COVID-19 containment zone after six persons living in the campus tested positive for the infection.

District Collector Tarun Pithode issued an order to this effect on Wednesday. Raj Bhavan sources said that after the first case of COVID-19 was found at the Raj Bhavan a couple of days back, the sample of Governor Lalji Tadon was also collected for testing.

The collector's order said that six COVID-19 cases were found in the employees' quarters inside the Raj Bhavan, which is located under Jahangirabad police station area.

162 new COVID-19 cases reported in Jammu and Kashmir

162 new corona virus cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, the government said. Meanwhile, 21 people have recovered.

The total number of positive cases in the union territory rose to 1921, including 854 recovered and 26 deaths.

Delhi Police North DCP tests positive, say report

"The Delhi Police North Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) has tested positive for the novel corona virus and has been kept under home quarantine. Three of his personal staff have also been quarantined," India Today reported.

33 new COVID-19 cases reported in Punjab today

Reports said that 33 people tested positive for the novel corona virus in Punjab on Wednesday, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 2,139 in the state.

Sixteen cases were reported in Amritsar, seven in Patiala, three in Pathankot, two each in Tarn Taran and Sangrur, and one each in Gurdaspur, Barnala and Ludhiana districts, according to a medical bulletin.

UP reports 269 new COVID-19 cases today

269 new corona virus cases have been reported in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 6,991. Toll stands at 182.

280 new COVID-19 cases reported in Rajasthan today

The Rajasthan health department said that 280 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths have been reported in the state on Wednesday, the total tally of cases in the state rises to 7,816. Active cases in state stand at 3,081. Toll is at 173.

 

Three NDMC employees test positive for COVID-19

Reports said that three employees of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, "prompting the civic body to seal a floor of its headquarters in Lutyen's Delhi and a section of another building housing its office in Gole Market," News18 reported.
