More Delta Plus cases reported in India: How this variant is rapidly spreading

  • The first case of the Delta Plus variant of Covid-19 was detected in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

Two people were found infected with the Delta Plus variant of the coronavirus in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district and one of them, a woman, died on Tuesday, the local administration said on Wednesday.

“A woman died in Patidar Hospital due to coronavirus on May 23 after she tested positive for Covid-19. Her sample and that of 14 others were sent for genome report (sequencing) in a lab in Bhopal. Out of these, 15 samples, two persons were found infected with the Delta Plus variant and among these two, a woman died on May 23 in the private hospital,” an official release said.

Ujjain collector Ashish Singh said there is no threat of the Delta Plus variant in the district, but cautioned people not to lower their guard and follow Covid-19 appropriate behaviour, including wearing a face mask, maintaining social distance and avoiding crowded places, the release added.

Here's all the latest update on Delta Plus variant:

  1. The Centre has asked the state governments to step up containment measures in districts where cases of Delta Plus variant have been found. In a letter to chief secretaries, Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan asked strict measures to be followed and vaccination coverage increased.
  2. The number of cases has increased from 22 on Tuesday to 40 on Wednesday. The three states where Delta Plus initially surfaced are Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh. Three villages have been sealed in Kerala due to cases of this highly transmissible variant of coronavirus. Maharashtra too has sent genome samples for testing for the Delta Plus variant.
  3. The first case of the Delta Plus variant of Covid-19 was detected in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, according Government Medical College (GMC) principal Shashi Sudhan Sharma.
  4. Tamil Nadu also reported its first case of the Delta Plus variant of Covid-19 in Chennai, with a city-based nurse getting infected with it, a top government official said on Wednesday.
  5. Two cases of Delta Plus variant of Covid-19 have been detected in Karnataka - in Bengaluru and Mysuru - state health minister Dr K Sudhakar said on Wednesday.
  6. The variant has been found in 11 countries and infected nearly 200 people. It has already been declared a variant of concern by the Indian government.
  7. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) have decided to conduct a study to see if the new and more potent variant of coronavirus can be neutralised by the existing vaccines in India.

5 Cases Of COVID-19 'Delta Plus' Variant In Madhya Pradesh, 1 Dead: Report

Delta Plus Variant Cases in Madhya Pradesh: The new 'Delta Plus' variant has been formed due to a mutation in the Delta or B.1.617.2 variant, first identified in India and one of the drivers of the deadly second wave.

Bhopal:

Five people have so far been found infected with the 'Delta Plus' variant of coronavirus in Madhya Pradesh and one of them has died, state Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang said today.

"The other four persons, who were vaccinated against COVID-19, are fine," he told news agency Press Trust of India. "One person from Ujjain, who died, was not inoculated," he added.

'Delta Plus' has been declared a variant of concern by the Centre.

So far, three people from Bhopal and two from Ujjain have been found infected with the 'Delta Plus' variant in Madhya Pradesh, the minister said.

"A genome sequencing machine will soon be installed in Bhopal and the state would then not have to send samples to Delhi," he added.

Ujjain Collector Ashish Singh confirmed that a 59-year-old woman, who died of COVID-19 on May 23, was infected with the 'Delta Plus' variant.

She tested positive for coronavirus on May 17. Later, her sample was sent for genome sequencing. On Tuesday, it was found that she was infected by the 'Delta Plus' variant, the official said.

Earlier, the sample of a 65-year-old woman from Bhopal was sent to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on May 23 and it came out positive for the 'Delta Plus' variant on June 16, officials said.

"The woman, who had received both doses of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine, recovered in home isolation," they said.

The new 'Delta Plus' variant has been formed due to a mutation in the Delta or B.1.617.2 variant, first identified in India and one of the drivers of the deadly second wave.

Though there is no indication yet of the severity of the disease due to the new variant, 'Delta Plus' is resistant to the monoclonal antibody cocktail treatment for COVID-19 recently authorised in India.

On Wednesday, Madhya Pradesh recorded 84 new cases of coronavirus and 21 fatalities, raising the tally of infections in the state to 7,89,499 and the number of deaths to 8,827, as per official data.
