Pfizer, BioNTech not sure about vaccines' effectiveness on new Covid variant 'Omicron'

This came after the World Health Organization (WHO) announced it identified a new COVID-19 strain, the B.1.1.529 that was initially found in southern Africa. WHO named the variant with the Greek letter 'Omicron'.

The pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech on Saturday issued a statement stating that they are not sure whether their vaccines would be able to help in the treatment of the new Covid-19 variant 'Omicron'.
The companies also promised to develop a new vaccine against the variant in about 100 days, Sputnik reported.

This came after the World Health Organization (WHO) announced it identified a new COVID-19 strain, the B.1.1.529 that was initially found in southern Africa. WHO named the variant with the Greek letter 'Omicron'.

"In the event that vaccine-escape variant emerges, Pfizer and BioNTech expect to be able to develop and produce a tailor-made vaccine against that variant in approximately 100 days, subject to regulatory approval," they added in the statement.

As reported by Sputnik, Pfizer and BioNTech said they expect more data on Omicron within the next two weeks and noted the variant significantly differs from previously observed ones, according to the statement.

The pharmaceutical companies underscored that they started working on making their vaccine adaptable to new possible variants months ago, adding that their vaccine is currently able to adjust itself within six weeks and ship initial batches within 100 days, the statement said.

In similar developments, amid the spread of the Omicron variant, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on Saturday postponed the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12), that was set to take place in Geneva.

As precautionary measures to contact the spread of the new variant, India on Friday added several countries to the list from where travellers would need to follow additional measures on arrival in India, including post-arrival testing for infection.

The US along with European Union and other major destinations have also moved to block flights from several African countries, CNN reported.

‘New variant more transmissible, could escape immunity’: Dr Gagandeep Kang on ‘Omicron’

India’s top micro-biologist and virologist, Dr Gagandeep Kang, said that the new variant of coronavirus, named ‘Omicron’ by WHO, could be more transmissible and could escape immunity.

Amid rising concern over the B.1.1529 variant of coronavirus, designated as a ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Professor Gagandeep Kang told India Today that the new variant could be more transmissible and could escape immunity. The B.1.1529 variant of SARS-CoV-2 was first detected in Africa’s Botswana.

India’s top micro-biologist and virologist, Gagandeep Kang, pointed out that the new variant, named ‘Omicron’ by WHO, could be more transmissible and it is very possible that it has spread to many other countries.

“Since we have the first identification on November 9, we already have a good sense of sequence data. We know that this is a strain that has mutations unlike the constellations that have been seen previously. So there are chances that it will spread more easily, and some chances that it may be able to evade immune response,” Dr Kang said.

She further added, “It is very possible that this virus may be in many more places than have been detected so far.”

Clinical data on the new coronavirus variant will be available in the next two weeks for us to understand the impact of this variant, Dr Gagandeep Kang told India Today.

Even as worries over the new coronavirus variant triggered widespread international travel ban, Dr Gagandeep Kang said that travel ban is not the solution. Talking about possible solutions to curb the spread of the new variant, Professor Kang underlined that quarantine and tracking of those who might be possibly infected should be top priority.

“A good surveillance system can stop onward transmission of this variant,” Dr Gagandeep Kang said.

She added that the third dose or booster dose of Covid-19 vaccine must be given to immunocompromised individuals now.

“Whether we call it a booster or third dose, we need to monitor the immune system of immunocompromised individuals and to make sure that they some level of response to vaccines,” Dr Kang said, adding, “We need specific vaccination strategy, specific management strategy for them, and so far we don’t have that.”
