As the coronavirus spreads, travel and other economic activity has slowed or stopped — leading economic experts to predict the pandemic will push the U.S. economy into a recession. Florida’s tourism-heavy economy is especially vulnerable.

Walt Disney World is closed. Spring training is off. The Palm Beach International Boat Show is canceled, along with a slew of smaller events that were scheduled to bring deep-pocketed visitors to Palm Beach County’s hotels and restaurants.

As the coronavirus spreads, travel and other economic activity has slowed or stopped — leading economic experts to predict the pandemic will push the U.S. economy into a recession.

Shrinking output is “all but certain,” said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate in Palm Beach Gardens.

“We’re effectively hitting the pause button on the economy, and the cascade that follows will be enough to push the economy into recession,” McBride said. “How deep? How long? That has yet to be determined.”
