Very simple. They divided the property into 5 parts (father, mother, 3 children)... they are giving their share also to the elder son... as he is taking care of them.. 

taking care is not about sending money.. it is about being with them in their hour of need or atleast visiting them very often.. may be this guy is too commercial and does not care about them at all.. something might have lead them to this drastic decision..

seems your friend is more into practical, he needs some profit in every scenario ? may be this could have noticed by parents and took that decision

If money is not everything why are  we living in USA leaving our old parents behind ilantivi cheppadaniki baguntai practically impossible. Humans are selfish beings. Atleast my friend is honest in this regard.
