All four convicts of Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case - Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, and Mukesh Singh - were hanged at 5:30am in Tihar jail today. The hanging was carried out as per the schedule after a three-judge Supreme Court bench rejected the final plea by the convicts' lawyer AP Singh to stay their execution in a late-night hearing.

Nirbhaya's rapists have been hanged to death at the Tihar Jail after more than seven years of brutal gangrape and murder of the paramedic.

The four convicts were executed at 5:30 AM. Hours before the hanging, they cried inconsolably inside their cells, according to reports. They were extremely restless during the night and did not sleep.

Only two of the convicts, Akshay and Pawan had dinner. Before the hanging, they were also asked for breakfast but all of them refused. None of them expressed any last wish either.

The convicts were closely monitored by the Tihar Jail authorities and orders had been issued to keep an eye on them so that they don't create any sort of distraction to delay the execution.

After hanging them, their bodies were taken to the Deendayal Hospital for postmortem, following which they will be handed over to their families.

As per the jail manual, if the family of the convicts refuse to take their body then the police administration cremates them. Due to the lack of any last wish, the money that they earned by working in jail will be given to their families from their prisoner account.

The 23-year-old psychotherapy student, dubbed by media as 'Nirbhaya', was gang-raped and brutalised on a moving bus on December 16, 2012, before being dumped on the road. She was airlifted to Singapore where she died on December 29, 2012.

New Delhi:

The four convicts in the Nirbhaya case spent a restless night at Delhi's Tihar Jail before their hanging before dawn today. Their last few hours were spent in isolation, in separate cells at Jail 3, jail officials said.

Akshay Thakur, 31, Pawan Gupta, 25, Vinay Sharma, 26, and Mukesh Singh, 32, were hanged at 5:30 this morning, giving closure to the family of a young medical student who was gang-raped and tortured on a moving bus in Delhi in 2012.

The execution took place less than two hours after the Supreme Court dismissed the final petition of the convicts.

"The convicts had not expressed any last wish or will to authorities," an official said.

They were woken at 3:30 am, around the time they learnt they had reached the end of the road in courts.

The four men refused to have their breakfast, their last meal before being taken to the gallows and were up much of the night, prison officials. They were asked to take a bath but none of them did.

The entire jail was on lockdown since last night, and officials said, few other prisoners  in Asia's largest prison facility could sleep a wink ahead of the first execution since 2015.

Jail doctors did a medical check-up of the four men. There were only five people who witnessed the hanging. The jail superintendent, deputy superintendent, the resident medical officer, the district magistrate and another jail staff member.

The execution was carried out by hangman Pawan Jallad who had done several "dummy executions".

Three convicts - Pawan, Vinay and Mukesh -did labour work at Tihar Jail. The money for the work they did did during their time in prison will be sent to their families, jail officials said.  Akshay Thakur, however, has no earnings as he did not engage in any labour work at Tihar. All their belongings too will be sent to their families.

Before he was taken to the gallows, Vinay pleaded with jail officials and sought forgiveness, jail sources said. Vinay had earlier in February attempted to hurt himself by banging his head against a wall in his cell.

Their bodies were kept hanging for 30 minutes as per the protocol in Delhi Prison Rule, following which a doctor declared them dead.

Their bodies were move to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for autopsy. A five-member panel will do the post-mortem before they are disposed as per their religion.

Organ Donation Request, Hanuman Chalisa: How Nirbhaya Convicts Spent Their Last Hours

Hundreds of people waiting outside Tihar Jail welcomed the official confirmation of the hanging with a loud cheer.

New Delhi: After a night-long court drama, the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case were hanged till death on Friday morning. Sandeep Goel, DG, Tihar Jail, confirmed to media persons a minute past 5:30am that all convicts were executed as per the warrant issued by the Patiala House Court.

Pawan Jallad, a hangman from Meerut, pulled the leaver at the scheduled time and the convicts were executed simultaneously. The jail doctors examined the bodies half an hour later and confirmed the deaths of Mukesh Singh, Pawan, Akshay Thakur and Vinay. He was paid Rs 15,000 for each execution.

Around 4.45 to 5am, District Magistrate Nehal Bansal went to the cells of the convicts and read out the warrant to all four. She then, along with the jail superintendent, medical officer and deputy superintendent asked them if they had a will.

None of the convicts expressed any last wishes to write a will and therefore all their belongings and the earnings made in jail would be handed over to their families.

While there was no response from Pawan or Akshay before their last moments, Mukesh gave in writing that he wanted to donate his body organs. Vinay gave some paintings to the jail superintendent and a hanuma chalisa and Baba ji's photo to his family.

The hands of all four were then tied behind their backs and masks placed around their heads. They were taken to the gallows by deputy superintendent in-charge and guarded by a head warden and six wardens – two in front, two behind them and two holding their arms.

"We expected resistance so had kept additional personnel ready to tackle them. But everything went off very peacefully," Sources told CNN-News 18.

While Mukesh and Vinay's families had met them one last time, Akshay and Pawan's families could not. Some family members of Pawan pelted stones outside Tihar when they were denied the opportunity to meet him one last time.

Hundreds of people waiting outside Tihar Jail welcomed the official confirmation of the hanging with a loud cheer. Social activist Yogita Bayana was seen distributing sweets, while many others held up posters saying justice has finally been delivered.

CNN News18 spoke to a class 4 student who, along with her father, waited outside jail to hear the news of hanging. "I had heard about how they had killed one aunty. So, I wanted to come and see their punishment," Chigisha said.

Her father said the execution would give Indian girls more hope about their safety and security.

Doctors of the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital will carry out the postmortem of bodies after which the remains will be handed over to the families.

Jail officials said that while Mukesh seemed to have accepted his fate, the other three spent a restless night hoping for some positive order from the Delhi High Court or Supreme Court. "The convicts repeatedly asked the jail officials if some order has come to delay the hanging," officials said.

Defence lawyer A P Singh had argued in the high court for the postponement of execution on grounds that President Ram Nath Kovind was already prejudiced when he rejected the mercy plea. In Supreme Court, Singh knocked post midnight asking for a last chance to allow Pawan's family to meet him. Both courts refused to pass any favourable order.
