Kashmiri photojournalist booked under anti-terror law for ‘anti-national posts’

Zahra, 26, a freelance photojournalist, has had her work published in various international news organisations including the Washington Post and the Al Jazeera. The Jammu and Kashmir state police have charged her under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, an anti-terror law that carries a jail term of up to seven years, for allegedly uploading “anti-national posts” on her social media accounts.

Statement by the Jammu and Kashmir police
 
“Cyber Police Station received information through reliable sources that one Facebook user namely “Masrat Zahra” is uploading anti-national posts with criminal intention to induce the youth and to promote offences against public tranquillity," a statement issued by the J-K Police said. — The Indian Express

In a conversation with HuffPost India, Zahra said, “I was just uploading my professional work and nothing else... I am clueless, I don’t know what to say, how to react.”
