In January 2007, a few Muslims groups went unruly during a Muharram procession in Gorakhpur and started teasing some Hindu girls. When a young Hindu boy, Raj Kumar Agrahari protested, he was brutally beaten by the Muslim men and Raj Kumar Agrahari was hospitalized. Under pressure from the Mulayam Singh government, district administration took no serious action against the criminals. Instead the District Magistrate advised Yogi Adityanath not to visit the incident site as it could create tensions. Adityanath initially agreed, but after Agrahari died, Yogi was not able to control himself and he disobeyed the magistrate and travelled to the site and started a non-violent dharna on the site with a group of followers. As Yogi was exposing the lack of action by the local administration due to the Muslim appeasement policies of Mulayam government, local police declared a curfew, to create a trap for Yogi’s arrest as they knew Yogi would not sit silent and would certainly be with the people. As expected, Adityanath broke the curfew and he was subsequently arrested and remand for a fortnight on charges of ‘disturbing peace’, while no concrete action was taken against the murderers of Raj Kumar Agrahari, said Pradeep Rao, a close aide of Yogi Adityanath. Rao also added that nothing more could have been expected from a JNU alum, Hari Om, who was the District Magistrate then. District Magistrate and Police Chief wanted to house-arrest Yogi in the temple premise, but Yogi insisted them to take him to jail. As the Police vehicle with Yogi moved on the streets of Gorakhpur, people laid down in front of the car. Police had to physically move two-three people at one time and then drive the vehicle ahead by a few meters. It took the administration more than 8 hours to cover a distance of two kilometers. That day the world witnessed the popularity of this monk. This extreme attitude of Muslim appeasement by the Mulayam government gave rise to a harsh wave of anger among the local majority population of Gorakhpur and they came out on the streets to protest. As an eyewash the Samajvadi government transferred the District Magistrate and the district police chief.
