Disparities between the total rise in deaths and the reported Covid-19 deaths can reflect limited testing for the virus. Some countries are counting only those who died in hospitals.

The difference between official Covid-19 deaths and the number of people who died beyond what would be expected in a typical year is particularly stark in countries that have been slow to acknowledge the scope of the virus.
