lets take the example of a very popular kids movie - Jurassic Park.

is it a good film or not? Its an atrocious film, if you read the book by Michael Crichton (who himself is a kook, but not in this book).

The film spoils almost all the interesting discussions and debates that happen in the book, about the pointlessness of trying to control a civilization, unpredictability of complex systems. Majority of Malcolm's (Chaos theoritician) dialogues are compressed into single punch lines. eg. 'Life finds a way'.

The movie ends with a t-rex battling raptors while everyone escapes, but the book has a lot going on after that, with grant venturing into raptor's den to study them etc. But its like they rejigged the entire script to fit the ending they wanted to keep. In the end they made it look like a kids popcorn movie, compared to the amazing, serious and violent one that was written by Crichton.

RGV does the same, picking and choosing bullshit around him to make his movies, without a deep inquiry into systems that he's claiming to observe and tap into for inspiration. All movie directors do this. They misread their characters, and impose their own motivations on them. In RGV's case, he tried to simplify criminal gang behaviour into scenes that are acceptable by mainstream audience because he's not skilled/smart enough to understand their behaviour and translate it onto screen without some self serving propaganda.

So after a while, all his films get repetitive because he bought into his own bullshit about his observing powers of the underworld.  So to claim that RGV is a genius gone wrong is just pure bullshit. He was never that good in the first place. He became much more lazy and more entitled as time went on. Simple.

Also to a large extent the medium of movies itself is a mediocre one. It encourages mediocrity. So I don't blame just RGV for this.
