Because it's convenient to think that way. I'm not saying humans are the only ones in the universe (and/or parallel universe), if someone is visiting us then they are obviously way more advanced/superior species than us. So it's safe to imagine the future ourselves are visiting us for our betterment than someone from other part of the universe(who could still be the future "us").
