Migrant worker dormitories are the source of almost all of the new coronavirus cases in Singapore, according to a New York Times analysis. The cases have far surpassed the number of other infections there since the outbreak began.

The Singapore government requires a minimum of 48 square feet of living space for each worker, but many dormitories can house up to 20 people per room. This is one typical layout, according to dormitory visits conducted by Transient Workers Count Too.

Many of the worker dormitories are on the outskirts of Singapore, including this one in the Tuas area. The government has now directed all the construction laborers to stop working until May 4, imposing a stay-at-home order for 180,000 foreign workers.

Singapore Health Ministry officials suspect that Mustafa Center, a 400,000-square-foot shopping mall, is the starting point for the outbreaks in the dormitories. But once they spread, the number of infections grew exponentially.

Migrant workers in Singapore have long struggled with a lack of medical care. At least one charity has suggested that this problem has contributed to the explosion of coronavirus cases among migrant workers.

Makes sense.!! Close proximity and over crowded dormitories can be a super source..

India is planning to evacuate thousands of stranded migrant workers in Gulf. They plan to deploy globemasters and navy ships apart from Air India flights to bring back Indians from Gulf which is being termed as largest evacuation activity ever..
