Furlough means exactly that... temporary. They keep benefits and some times they also get paid a fraction.. For ex: Marriott furloughed most of IT ( keeping few operations staff) but they get paid 1 day per week : enough to pay for their part of benefits. Good for high paying jobs.

For retail , minimum wage employees it's better to get laid off these days.

For >80% they get paid more with covid package 600$ a week is more than what you make
