China hits Australia with barley trade tariffs amid push for COVID-19 origin inquiry

China has imposed tariffs totalling 80.5% on Australia’s barley imports over claims Australia subsidised its farmers and sold barley into China below the cost of production. The move comes as Australia and the European Union lead calls for a WHO probe into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. Australia has rejected the basis for the decision, and as China’s biggest barley importer the country is expected to lose AUD$600 million (USD $390 million). More than 100 of the WHO’s 194 members have backed the international COVID-19 probe, including Russia, the US, the UK and South Korea.

looks like china over estimating itself. only time will tell.

They are simply playing the hand they are dealt with. every self respecting nation would do the same thing.

They are building leverage, not losing it, through these moves. They will be ready to back down if they have to.

why do you think they have been so successful in such a short time?

as much as i wish Chinese nation is obliterated, the way the world is ganging up against them is sick.
