On Wednesday, President Donald Trump posted a Tweet falsely claiming he fired former secretary of defense James Mattis. Mattis resigned from the position in December of 2018 after the administration decided to withdraw US troops from Syria, according to Associated Press. In Wednesday’s Tweet, President Trump also incorrectly claimed that he changed Mattis’ nickname from “Chaos” to “Mad Dog”. According to journalists from CNN, The National Review and The Dispatch, the nickname preceded Trump’s presidency and there are published references to Mattis being referred to as “Mad Dog” by his troops as early as 2004.
