Live Hangout with Abhijit Iyer-Mitra on the evolving China situation

  • Are PM Modi's Bureaucrats Leading Him Astray On China's Land Grab Aspirations ?
  • Is India in a Position to Escalate Aggressions with China alone ( assuming Pakistan & Nepal dont complicate things further ) ?
  • What if anything has the Industrial Might of a Nation got to do with being able to Wage War Indefinitely ?
  • What is the most likely Outcome of This Flare Up?
  • Is Modi likely to seek an Appeasement Route?
  • Is China's Support for India for Entry into the UN Security Council club Bearing Heavily on Modi's mind?
  • Will India ever Be Allowed Into the UN Security Council ?

Note :

It pays to reckon for a second if the entry into Security Council is even worth the hassle? Is it totally worth it? Not so much anymore in the new world order?

Is the role unclear?

The Security Council consists of fifteen members, of which five are permanentChinaFranceRussia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

These were the great powers, or their successor states, that were the victors of World War II.

Permanent members can veto any substantive resolution, including those on the admission of new member states or nominees for the office of Secretary-General.

Which one - the first one or the second ?

The larger point here is that Iyer-Mitra says we cant afford to wage war with China much less China + Pak + Misc powers.

I dont get what Swamy knows about China's intentions but they typically dont ally with potential adversaries. Thats not how

China thinks or operates. China has larger ambitions & sees its role very differently on the world stage than India does.

This is why Europe is all but ready to embrace Chinese hegemony. They are fine with Huaweis intrusive tech.

Both agree theres a power struggle within China right now.

I dont think we have an appetite for war. Swamy doesnt sound like a person whos sure of things he says.

I don't know if its intentional -- I doubt it is -- but the general level of public discourse, scholarship & punditry on these geopolitical matters

in India is so dire, pitiful & lacking that it should give the people genuine concern.

In the U.S. its the other way around - there's an overabundance of all those things.

I do hope that the Indian strategists are not phoning it in.
