Qantas, the national carrier of Australia, will let about one-fifth of its employees go from all across its business as part of a pandemic recovery strategy, the company announced Thursday. Another 15,000 employees will continue to be stood down without pay while up to 100 planes will be grounded. The move is planned to reduce costs by AU$15 billion during an estimated three-year period of lower activity. Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said he will stay at his current position to see through the recovery plan. The global aviation industry has been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the IATA forecasting a difficult recovery period ahead.
