Thousands of Hong Kongers cast their ballots in the second and final day of primaries on Sunday to choose candidates for pro-democracy parties in the city’s upcoming Legislative Council elections in September. More than 200,000 people turned up to the polls in more than 200 polling stations on Saturday despite warnings from government officials that the polls may be in breach of a Beijing-imposed controversial national security law, which came into effect on June 30.

Background

- On Friday, police raided the office of a prominent pollster that helped organize the election
- Turnout at the election is seen as a litmus test of broader opposition to the national security law
- The pro-democracy parties aim to achieve a majority in the 70-seat legislature in the upcoming September polls, potentially giving them power to block government proposals
- The opposition camp secured a landslide victory in district council elections in November last year
