For kid I would get any entry level laptop deal , brands don't matter but SSD is a must nowadays , 1 minute start up time reduced to 15-20 secs .

You can get  deals on staples for 400$ laptops from time to time .

Just aim for 8GB ram , SSD , processor does not really matter since it's just for online learning .  Try to get Ultrabook since it can run cool , lightweight and long battery .

Most of the entry level laptops can be upgraded by yourself . Don't need to pay the manufacturers 100$ for 8GB .  you will need to to pick a higher price product for 16GB ram

It takes just 30 mins  and costs 30-40$ , just make sure the laptop has an empty RAM slot before buying .
