Raja Reddy was a popular leader in Kadapa district in Rayalaseema, which is notorious for bloody fights among rival factions backed by political parties.  He was the sarpanch of Pulivendula.

Raja Reddy had five sons — George, Rajasekhar, Vivekananda, Sudhir and Ravindra. The last two kept away from politics. Sudhir Reddy had once told this correspondent, “I dread blood.” Sudhir Reddy had business in South Africa, while Ravindra was a small-time contractor. George Reddy too was a contractor and died some years ago.

The Supreme Court verdict upholding the High Court judgement of life sentence to 11 accused in the sensational murder case of Yeduguri Sandinti Raja Reddy, father of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, comes exactly 17 days before Raja Reddy’s 11th death anniversary.

Sixteen persons were accused in the brutal murder of Raja Reddy after waylaying him near a culvert in Vemula town in Pulivendula Assembly constituency and hurling a bomb from a close range causing his instant death on May 23, 1998, during Telugu Desam Party rule.

He was going from YSR Estates at Idupulapaya to Pulivendula.

Of the 16, two had died while two others were excluded from the list of accused by CID.

S.V. Satish Kumar Reddy, who contested as Telugu Desam Party candidate against the Chief Minister from Pulivendula Assembly segment in this election and the then Vemula mandal president, and Perla Parthasarathi Reddy, then Pulivendula market committee chairman, who were booked as conspirators, have been dropped from the list of accused.

Retaliatory attack

An accused Perla Umamaheswara Reddy, brother of Mr. Parthasarathy Reddy has been killed in a retaliatory attack and another accused, Brahmananda Reddy, died in an accident later.

The 11 persons sentenced to life term are Perla Ramanjaneya Reddy, Perla Somasekhara Reddy, Perla Ramakrishna Reddy, Perla Sesha Reddy, Annareddy Sambasiva Reddy, Annareddy Srinivasulu Reddy, Annareddy Dasaratha Reddigari Lakshmi Reddy, Poreddy Viswanatha Reddy, Palle Venkatarami Reddy, Vadderapu Obaiah and Rajipalle Sudhakara Reddy.

Double murder

Nine of them are lodged in Kadapa Central Prison since the High Court judgement on September 29, 2006, and two others are serving life-term in a case of double murder of two Congress activists.

at that time news sources:

Y S Raja Reddy, father of Andhra Pradesh Congress president Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, MP, was killed on the spot in a bomb attack by a faction of the ruling Telugu Desam Party this afternoon near a bus stand at Vemula village in Cuddapah district.

Reddy and his followers were proceeding to his native Pulivendla town from Vempalli when the TDP faction hurled bombs at him. One of his followers accompanying in his car was also killed in the incident.

The attack on Reddy was allegedly masterminded by the faction headed by Umamaheswara Reddy, brother of Pulivendla marketing committee chairman Parthasarathy Reddy, an arch rival of the 'YS' group in the district, official sources said.

Reddy was booked early this week for assaulting a police officer at Pulivendla.

The number of the injured in the bomb attack was not immediately known.

A general alert has been sounded in Cuddapah district and adjoining areas of Anantapur district with police contingents being deployed in the sensitive areas. All precautions had been taken to avert any possible retaliatory attacks, sources said.

Initial reports from Pulivendla said that Congress workers had attacked vehicles of their TDP rivals at Panagala road.

Dr Rajasekhara Reddy, who is now in Hyderabad, is scheduled to leave for Pulivendla later today.
