By percapita?

What percapita? When someone makes the next vaccine for coronavirus, are going to expect more vaccines from countries that have more population? America is a large country, with a lot of stupid people. You can't expect 1% of the people to have enough intelligence for the rest of the country.

Countries with comparable development should have the same output(research wise) if all other things are equal. If not then it is either the universities/research centers or the people that are inefficient.

The real question is why the UK is winning so many Nobel prizes compared to its size.

Their population is 65 million though and they have fewer ‘elite’ universities. Their work is still leading to many Nobels comparatively.

Okay, if you want to believe the UK is better, so be it. I haven't been there, but I have friends that went to Cambridge. In general, the research culture in Europe is a lot more relaxed than it is here.

you're comparing a lake to an ocean..

US is #1 worlds most powerful nation

Market is unlimited here, $ value aint bad at all, good for kids school and college, better universities.

In UK, the market is very limited, you really have to be something special or extra smart or too lucky to get a job after your education. Too less jobs for a bigger educated crowd, lot of them returned back home just cos they;re unable to get a job in that tiny market

Relaxed culture or not, Western European universities are doing some excellent research and they will give American universities a good run for their money. UK, Germany, France, AUS/Switz, Benelux, and Scandinavian countries have done well put together (probably closer to 500 wins compared to 383 by the US). We cannot really say that their work is inferior when their recognition is saying otherwise.

I lived in UK for 12yrs and returned back to India for good in 2018.

Positives

Europe has better public transport in general compared to US. Personally i hate driving as i treat it as waste of time , instead i can utilize the time by reading book/browsing if travelling in bus.
Less distance to India
Good rich heritage compared to Young US
Very less gun crime compared to US
Lots of tourist attractions to travel nearby(paris,swiss,norway,UK,germany,austria,Italy..)

negatives

Salaries and oppurtunities are very less compared to US
Innovation and discoveries hardly happen in Europe these days.. whole outlook looks like retirement homes
in UK weather sucks big time(most of time it rains kind of seattle weather)
You may not have chance to work with best people around world staying in Europe
