We got a deal when we moved in. Back then it was 3.8k, but we got it for 10% lower. So we only pay 3.5k. But I saw some other units at 3.5k now on the website. So, I think the rents are going down. I think when we renew our lease, I am hoping that it would stay at 3.5k or lower.

Many of these would rather live in a rich area and be poor rather than live in a boring place with moderate income .

California is one of the worst place in the world let alone US for moving up social hierarchy 

California has so much more than just tech. South San Francisco is known as the birthplace of biotechnology. Bay area, LA and San Diego are all biotech hubs. SF also has a lot of research institutes, LBL, NASA, Livermore. LA has SpaceX, JPL is in Pasadena, there is Caltech there too, not to mention, Scripps, La Jolla and others. 

These places still pay decently, maybe not 300-500k like some tech companies in the area, but most of these places pay atleast 150-200k which is enough to have a decent living anywhere in California.

$66,529 is the median household income .  California has one of the highest poverty rates in the country . It is one of the worst state in country in terms of social mobility , that means if you are born poor in California , you stay poor .

It's a great state if you are rich and have a headstart in life , most people don't do STEM jobs

But there are great schools here, kids born in California get a preference in those schools. Social mobility is only possible because of education.

Lol you think the poor kids in California get to attend good schools ? California is the most segregated state in country with archaic zoning laws . Why so you think houses in good school districts are so pricey ? It's to ensure that undersirable people are kept out.

you ask any liberal neighborhood if they want to help poor people , they will say yes .but if you try to build low income housing near their neighborhood they will go up in arms and sue the hell out of the state

I am talking about Universities though. There are stories of people moving up the ladder all the time, it takes a lot of effort though. Some schools have a ton in endowments. Private schools are obviously better, but I am sure state schools like Berkeley also provide good education. And they take a lot of students.
