With more than 69,000 new cases on the books, the U.S. is approaching daily infection levels seen during the midsummer peak! The increase comes after the U.S. government on Friday gave some of the first specific information about how it will handle vaccine distribution, targeting vulnerable populations under long-term care.

The seven-day moving average of daily new cases in the U.S., which helps smooth irregularities in the data, was 53,405 on Thursday, and the 14-day average was 50,137. When the seven-day average is higher than the 14-day average, as it has been in the U.S. since Oct. 5, it suggests cases are rising.

The rate of infection in Midwestern states remains high. Wisconsin and Indiana both reported record-high numbers of daily cases for the second day in a row on Friday, with 3,861 and 2,283 respectively.

North Dakota and South Dakota have the highest ratio of infections, with nine or more new cases per 10,000 people, according to Johns Hopkins’s data. Montana and Wisconsin followed with more than six new infections per 10,000 people.
