While most 14-year-olds are just finishing up junior high, Texan Anika Chebrolu was submitting her award-winning research for a potential cure for COVID-19.

The eighth grader from Nelson Middle School in Frisco won the prestigious 3M Young Scientist Challenge award along with $25,000 for her research in developing a possible cure for the novel coronavirus.

"Anika used in-silico methodology for drug discovery to find a molecule that can selectively bind to the Spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in an attempt to find a cure for the COVID-19 pandemic," 3M Young Scientist Lab reported on their website.

In a video interview with Judy Shaw of the New York Stock Exchange, Chebrolu said, "I'm excited, still trying to process everything."

According to 3M, Chebrolu initially started out researching effective cures for influenza after coming down with a severe case of it last year, but her scope of work soon changed when the pandemic hit.

"With the help of my mentor Dr. Mahfuza Ali, I switched topics and targeted the SARS-CoV-2 virus because of the immense impact it's made in the world in less than a year," Chebrolu told Shaw.

"Being a scientist, I know what it takes to work on a scientific project, and beyond her age, that work Anika did is amazing," Dr. Ali said in the interview. "Her enthusiasm, her tenacity, it was amazing."

All the fellow's...just understand it, its just a model of drug discovery...
