India vs Australia: Ravindra Jadeja suffers dislocated thumb and possible fracture at SCG

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Scans reveal dislocated thumb and possible fracture for Ravindra Jadeja
  • Jadeja was hit on the left thumb by a sharp Mitchell Starc bouncer on Day 3 in Sydney
  • Earlier, Rishabh Pant's scans revealed no fracture after he was struck on elbow

In yet another major injury blow to India on their tour of Australia, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been diagnosed with a dislocated thumb and possible fracture after he took a blow to his thumb on Day 3 of the 3rd Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. India support staff are suspecting a fracture and are awaiting final reports after the all-rounder was taken for scans during the 3rd session on Saturday.

However, Rishabh Pant, who did not take the field during Australia's 2nd innings, after he was hit on his elbow by a well-directed bouncer from Pat Cummins, has avoided any major concern and is fine, India Today has learned.

Neither of them took the field towards the end of the day's play when Australia stretched their lead to 197. Mayank Agarwal came in as the substitute fielder for Ravindra Jadeja during the final session on Day 3 while Wriddhiman Saha took over the wicketkeeping duties in the absence of Rishabh Pant.

In the 99th over of the Indian innings, a sharp bouncer from Mitchell Starc hit Jadeja flush on his gloves. Replays showed the ball crashed into the left thumb and the all-rounder was in great discomfort. He called for phyiso's attention and there was another stoppage in play following the blow to Pant.

Jadeja got his thumb taped and carried onto bat. He added crucial runs with No. 11 batsman Mohammed Siraj as India managed to bring Australia's lead to less than 100. However, Jadeja did not take the field during Australia's 2nd innings as he was spotted on the television cameras with heavy taping on his left hand. Jadeja soon took to the hospital for scans.

Jadeja's absence will come as a big blow to Team India who will miss Jadeja's all-round capabilities. Jadeja picked up 4 wickets in the first innings and ran out Steve Smith with a brilliant direct hit.

Jadeja joins India's growing injury list

Jadeja joins the long injury list that India have suffered in the ongoing tour of Australia. While Ishant Sharma was ruled out of the Test series, Mohammed Shami suffered a fracture during the first Test and Mohammed Siraj replaced him in India's 8-wicket win in Melbourne. Umesh Yadav was ruled out with a calf injury following which Navdeep Saini made his debut in the 3rd Test.

Notably, Ravindra Jadeja himself was ruled out of the first Test after he suffered a hamstring injury and concussion during the T20I series opener in Canberra in December, 2020. Jadeja picked up the hamstring injury after which he was hit on the helmet. Jadeja carried on to bat but he was replaced by Yuzvendra Chahal as a concussion substitute during Australia's failed chase.

R Ashwin played as the lone spinner in India's 8-wicket loss in the Test series opener in Adelaide. However, Jadeja returned to the playing XI in the 2nd Test, replacing captain Virat Kohli who had left on paternity leave. Jadeja made an immediate impact as he hit a match-winning fifty in the first innings and picked up 3 wickets across 2 innings.

India lodge complaint of racial abuse against Siraj, Bumrah at SCG

Siraj talks to officials after the third day's play

The Indian team management has lodged a complaint about two of their players - Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj - having faced racial abuse from the crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground during the third Test. It is learnt that the abuse had occurred over the second and third day of the Test match.

It all came to a head at the end of the third day's play when a bunch of senior players led by captain Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin spoke to the two umpires Paul Reiffel and Paul Wilson and brought to their notice that two of their players had been subjected to the abuse.

There was a discussion between the umpires, security officials and the said Indian players for close to five minutes after the close of play. The Indian team then hung around in the dressing room for a while when the India security official had a quick chat with the security officers at the ground, and also the ICC security official present at the venue.

Cricbuzz learns that the issue rests with ICC until further notice.

Gabba Test - India fear multiple quarantines will impact home series against England

Travelling to Brisbane might mean serving mandatory two-week quarantine upon return to India

Story Image

The confirmed case of the UK strain of Covid-19 in Brisbane could add to India's fears of playing the fourth Test at the Gabba. Apart from the obvious medical concern generated by the new strain, BCCI officials also worry that it could impact travel plans and upset the schedule for the home series against England.

That is one of the key issues outlined by the team management and the BCCI in their communication with Cricket Australia this week, ESPNcricinfo understands.

Though there is currently no special restriction on travel from Australia into India, the BCCI fears that the rules might change quickly to keep pace with the health implications, and impact the team. At present, all travellers from the UK to New Delhi - even those testing negative on arrival - have to serve a mandatory week-long institutional quarantine period and a further week of quarantine at home (though there is scope for exemption for those with connecting flights). If a rule like this is applied to the team, it would affect the cricket schedule. India are scheduled to fly out of Australia the day after the end of the Test series on January 19 and the England series is scheduled to start on February 5.

Over the past few weeks, the Indian team management has expressed its reluctance to travel to Brisbane more than once, mainly because of the hard quarantine protocol put in place by the Queensland government to deal with the Covid-19 situation. And now, with Brisbane under a three-day lockdown because of the reported case, the BCCI and the Indian team management are concerned.

The other reason for the Indians' concern, as reported earlier, is the possibility that they would be placed under severe restrictions during the Test in Brisbane, with the Queensland government's rule forcing them to only leave the team hotel for training and the match itself.

Earlier this week, the BCCI told Cricket Australia that it would not agree to players' movement being limited to the team hotels. Cricket Australia, which has booked hotels exclusively for the teams in both Sydney, where the third Test is currently on, and Brisbane, has in reply pointed out that the teams were free to mill around within the hotel in designated areas.

It is understood that Cricket Australia has also told BCCI that it was tough for it to find a replacement venue for the final Test considering most Test grounds across Australia have been hosting the Big Bash League matches. Another significant challenge of finding an alternate venue is that exemptions would be required to travel to a state other than Queensland, which the CA feels is impossible given the constraints.

The Indian team has suggested staying on in Sydney. However, it is understood that no request to prepare a second pitch at the SCG - the only viable venue should the Test need to be moved out of Brisbane - has been made yet.
