He was in a controlling relationship where he wants to dominate her... he had anger issues, abused her, made her feel inferior and subservient to him because of her past issues... when she got out of it, he couldn’t take it... 

 this is definitely not a healthy relationship..

This is the similar case happened with my friend! I think he was dead

 by now ( I met him  few years ago in a very pathetic situation)
