A new variant of Covid-19 has been identified in the southeast of England, UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said Monday, as he announced that London would return to a strict lockdown this week, after coronavirus cases there soared.

"Over the last few days, thanks to our world-class genomic capability in the UK, we have identified a new variant of coronavirus, which may be associated with the faster spread in the southeast of England," Hancock said in Parliament.
He said that more than 1,000 cases with this variant had been identified, predominantly in the south of England, and that "numbers are increasing rapidly."

"I must stress at this point that there is currently nothing to suggest that this variant is more likely to cause serious disease, and the latest clinical advice is that it's highly unlikely that this mutation would fail to respond to a vaccine," Hancock added.
He said that "it shows we've got to be vigilant and follow the rules, and everyone needs to take personal responsibility not to spread this virus."

What are tier three (very high) rules?

You cannot mix indoors, in private gardens or in most outdoor venues, except  with your household or bubble

You can meet in a group of up to six in other outdoor spaces, such as parks, beaches or countryside

Shops, gyms and personal care services (such as hairdressing) can stay open

Bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants must stay closed, except for delivery and takeaway

Sports fans cannot attend events in stadiums

Indoor entertainment venues - such as bowling alleys and cinemas - must stay closed

People are advised not to travel to and from tier three areas.

“Here's what the studies don't yet show. They haven't looked at whether the vaccine prevents someone from carrying Covid-19 and spreading it to others. It's possible that someone could get the vaccine but could still be an asymptomatic carrier. They may not show symptoms, but they have the virus in their nasal passageway so that if they're speaking, breathing, sneezing and so on, they can still transmit it to others.
This is the main reason why we can't stop wearing masks right after we get the vaccine. The vaccine will protect you from getting ill and then ending up hospitalized. But it's possible that you could still carry the virus and be contagious to others. So those who get the vaccine should still be wearing masks and practicing physical distancing.”
