his h1 got picked in 2014 and got i797 

Never went for stamping - just left it unused- probably that i797 is expired as well

can he now file extension thru current employer (or) find a new employer and transfer?

US lo untey out of status .. india lo untey doesnt matter , h1 is h1 irrespective of employer . unused h1 is all that matters

IMO- If his H1 is valid, he can transfer the H1 to new employer. If his H1 is expired l, I don’t know how he can transfer to new employer.

but this is unused kada....so USCIS will calculate how yrs left and it will show up 6yrs?

He never came to US

just got the i797 after lottery and left it there. Did not even go for stamping
