Thiruvananthapuram: The BJP in Kerala has decided to work closely with the various Christian communities and church denominations, and thus ending all the ambiguities regarding the various issues pertaining to the community with the saffron party and thus signalling the party’s secular outreach ahead of the crucial assembly elections in April.

As part of the mission, Mizoram Governor and senior BJP leader PS Sreedharan Pillai on January 29th visited Malankara Orthodox Syrian church headquarters in Kottayam and met church head Baselios Marthoma Paulose-2.

K Surendran who addressed the press in Thrissur revealed the party stance and stated that the marginalised majority community members and the Christian community are equally grieved in Kerala as they are not receiving what they are entitled to.

“This is the right time for both sections to work together. The Christian community leaders have already drawn the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the discriminations they are facing in Kerala even in the distribution of the benefits of the Central government schemes, and we feel there is truth in what they are saying”, said BJP state president K Surendran.

The BJP president added that both the UDF and the LDF were appeasing the extremist communal forces. “While the UDF is being controlled by the Muslim League and the Jamaat-e-Islami, the LDF is in an open alliance with SDPI and the PFI.

The Bonhomie between BJP and the Church denominations in Kerala has begun in early 2000. Senior leaders like LK Advani and various church heads had met multiple times.

Meanwhile, with the Church demanding a probe in the various ‘Love Jihad’ and the ‘’Halaal” boards that are witnessed across the state, the BJP leaders are trying to find a middle path in all these contentious issues.

CASA (Christian Association and Alliance for Social Action), an organization based in Cochin has been critical and vocal regarding the ‘Love Jihad’ and the Halaal issue in the state. The organization has been maintaining that Love Jihad is a serious social issue that needs to be curbed and hence the central government should intervene in the matter.

“Love Jihad has been a menace in the society and forceful conversion in the guise of marriage has been reported in many instances where Christian girls are the victims. The issue of Halaal food being promoted is another matter of concern where religion and food are being used to propagate an ideology that is not suited for a secular democratic country”, said a senior member in CASA.

The state assembly elections nearing, the state BJP unit is treading cautiously in the matter as the upcoming polls are extremely critical as far as the saffron party is concerned.
